Honolulu, situated on the island of Oahu, has a population of 390,738 according to 2010 census data, though the accompanying county adds almost an additional 600,000 people to that number. The name "Honolulu" means "sheltered harbor" or "calm port," an appropriate name for one of the U.S.'s primary naval ports. Honolulu has been the capital of Hawaii since 1845, when King Kamehameha III moved the capital from Maui to Oahu. Though the monarchy fell in 1893, the city stayed on as the capital of the islands. It is not only the most westernmost, but also the most southernmost major city in the United States. Due to its tropical climate, Honolulu's temperature only fluctuates an average of twenty degrees between its summer high and winter low. July and August temperatures reach up to 88 degrees, while December and January temperatures drop to 66. The city experiences 90 rainy days each year, but also is privileged to enjoy an average of more than 3000 sunshine hours each year.

Honolulu has an Asian majority population, as might be expected from its Pacific location. Only 18% of the population is white, 8% is native Pacific Islander, and 54% is Asian. The Asian ethnic groups this encompasses include (in order of largest population) Japanese, Filipinos, Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Asian Indians, Laotians, Thais, Cambodians, and Indonesians. The largest economic driver for the city is tourism. As a gateway to the islands of Hawaii, Honolulu oversees the $10 billion tourism revenue each year. To a lesser extent, business, trade, and military operations/research all also play important roles in Honolulu's economy.

Though there are no professional sports teams based out of Hawaii, it is still rated the fittest city in the U.S. The first every Ironman Triathlon was held in Honolulu, and the city currently hosts the world championship each year. The University of Hawaii offers a variety of spectator sports at the collegiate level for people to enjoy, and high school football also has wide appeal. Other entertainment options include the Honolulu Symphony, the oldest symphony in the Western U.S., and the Honolulu Museum of Art.
