Reno, Nevada is famous for its casinos and being the birthplace of Caesars Entertainment Corporation. Divorce and gambling became large businesses for Reno in the 1930s when Nevada had more relaxed laws regarding these practices than other states. Though divorce has become legal across the nation, Reno is still a large gambling and recreation destination.

Reno is much more than casinos. There are three major bodies of water near Reno: Lake Tahoe, the Truckee River, and the Pyramid Lake, as well as 18 ski resorts within 11 miles of the city, helping the city to cover both summer and winter tourism. To bring even more tourists to the area, Reno has several events throughout the year, including Hot August Nights, a classic car convention; Street Vibrations, a motorcycle gathering and rally; The Great Reno Balloon Race; and the Reno Air Races. The city also hosts the only PGA golf tournament in the state of Nevada, the Reno-Tahoe Tour.

The city of Reno has gained even more attention with the television show Reno 911! Though it isn't actually filmed in Reno, there are several movies that have been, including Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Misfits, Waking Up in Reno, and many more. The city also developed the Reno Historical App that was released on May 9, 2014 to celebrate Reno's 111th birthday. The free app allows people to view Reno's influential places, people, and moments that helped to shape history.

The University of Nevada, Reno is the oldest university in the state. Truckee Meadows Community College, the Career College of Northern Nevada, and a University of Phoenix campus are all located within Reno. The area experiences a large amount of wildfires that disrupt the city by causing property damage and sometimes loss of lives. The wetlands are a very important feature of the area, helping to filter the water and home to numerous different species.
